Whisky and Gin & Tonic Experience

Today had been quite an eventful day, and it wasn’t over yet.  In fact, it was about to get better.  If you’ve missed how it had been spent, click on the links below:

The day would conclude with a whisky and gin tasting in the Terrace Bar at the Chesterfield Hotel.  Running late, we arrived at the hotel just in time for our tastings.  When I set the appointment the night before, I was a bit apprehensive to lock into a specific time.  The tasting required an appointment; however, not knowing how our day would unfold, I was afraid we’d find ourselves involved in something we wouldn’t want to leave—like hanging at the Admiralty for instance.  Sure enough, that’s exactly what happened.  Nevertheless, the tasting would be quite enjoyable.

Going into this tasting, I had great concern regarding my palate.  Ideally, a clean palate is how you would like to enjoy a tasting of this nature.  My palate was anything but clean.  I had just spent the past few hours at the Admiralty putting down wonderful cask ales.  Just prior to that, a great deal of time was spent at Gordon’s Wine Bar enjoying several glasses of Bordeaux.  My palate was all but destroyed.

In spite of this scenario, our appointment was set.  The tasting would proceed.

I participated in the Whisky Nosing and Tasting.  During this tasting I would sample four different styles of Scotch, each paired with a specific chocolate.  The flavor of the chocolate helped identify the different flavors in the Scotch.  Believe it or not, it actually works!  If you’re a Scotch drinker, you would appreciate this tasting.

Kathie participate in the Gin and Tonic Experience.  This tasting consisted of four gin and tonics, each with a different gin, each with a different tonic.  I will not lie, I managed to sample each of the four gin and tonics.  Along with my Scotch tasting, It’s fair to say I did well for myself.  Let’s not even talk about the wine and beer I had all day.

I’m sure at this point you would like to hear the specifics regarding our tastings.  I’m sure you’d like to know what Scotch’s I had, or what chocolates went with them.  Well …  I had pretty much spent the entire day drinking  … and, well … you can you see where I’m going with this, right?  You guessed it, I remember nothing!  Everything aside, I can barley pronounce the names of these Scotch’s (you know what I mean), let alone ever remember their names.  In the end, I never had a chance!  As for Kathie’s gin and tonics . . . do I really need to point out she was my drinking companion throughout the day?  Sorry … I got nothing!

Despite barely having a memory of the occasion, I must say I greatly enjoyed the tastings—for several reasons.  It was not only delicious, it was fun and informative.  The ambience of the Terrace Bar, along with their incredible staff, created a wonderful atmosphere for the occasion.  I’d also like to extend a big thanks to our bartender Adrian for the wonderful demonstration, and for recommending the Lagavulin 16—the perfect end to a wonderful day.
